LOSING A JOB AFFECTS YOUR SEARCH FOR EMPLOYMENT

Are you stressed out by an unexpected career change? Losing your job, and unemployment, are among life's most traumatic events.

Did you know that how you react to the loss of a job will make or break your search for new employment? It’s true! Dr. Joseph is an expert in the area of Job-Loss Recovery, and completed her doctoral dissertation on the subject [Consulting Psychology Journal Ref: Joseph & Greenburg].

“During my years as an executive search consultant, I learned that job candidates needed to prepare emotionally and mentally, as well as physically, for the job search if they were to land the most desirable jobs. Most did not and, as a result, may have had great-looking resumes but did not perform at their best during interviews.

What they had overlooked were steps one and two and instead had begun with step three of the job hunt, which includes the physical aspects such as resume creation and the technical skills needed for networking and interviewing. Steps one and two involve emotional and mental preparation and—if accomplished properly before step three—can reduce landing time by months, as demonstrated by the job-loss recovery scientific study that was my doctoral dissertation.

In that study, participants were lead, via a recording, through just six 20-minute sessions of a guided mental imagery protocol designed to achieve the emotional and mental steps. When landing time was monitored two months later, just 12% of the placebo control group had landed jobs compared to 62% of the guided imagery group—an astounding difference. Who wouldn’t want to be in the guided imagery group?”
Dr. Lynn Joseph

HOW IT WORKS

The Program's guided imagery system was scientifically tested in a controlled study of exiting employees. Half the participants listened to the imagery recording over a two-week period and the other half--a placebo group--was instructed to imagine setting and achieving job hunt goals over the same period. Both groups simultaneously received outplacement services.

The following bar graph shows the re-employment difference between the groups after eight weeks, as published in The Consulting Psychology Journal, a peer-reviewed journal of the American Psychological Association. Note that participants received just six 20-minute imagery sessions.

62% secured new jobs within two months!

(compared to 12% in the placebo control group)

THE PROGRAM
  • The Job-Loss Recovery Guide: A Proven Program For Getting Back to Work - Fast! (New Harbinger Publications, 2003)

  • Set of two guided imagery CDs: The Job-Loss Recovery Program (Discovery Dynamics, Inc., 2003)

The Job-Loss Recovery Guide workbook prompts the reader when to listen to each of the six CD selections. Lynn guides the listener through a step-by-step system of relaxing and transformative guided imagery/visualization exercises.

These exercises can be simply defined as thought processes that direct and focus the imagination to create experiences in the mind; similar to a directed daydream.
